How to Prevent ‘Trout Pout’ with Lip Fillers

Here at Face Hub Facial Aesthetics, we understand that people want their lips to look naturally plump without getting what is known as ‘trout pout’.

Here are a few tips to know when getting lip filler to ensure your results are satisfactory to you.

Build up Lip Filler

Nowadays people want quick and easy results but when it comes to your lips it is important to take your time to get the perfect results. Instead of getting a large amount of filler in your first appointment, we recommend slowly using low volumes over multiple visits to get the desired results. Having your treatment done this way will make it easier to make changes each time instead of adding too much where you are then not happy and it is more difficult to fix. During your treatment you will have a mirror and will see the progress of your lips so you know if it is going over the results you want. Here in Face Hub Facial Aesthetics, we only use the best filler on the market which is Juvéderm. This is made of hyaluronic acid which can be dissolved so if you are not happy with your results there is no problem in removing them but building it up slowly until you are happy is better than having them completely removed after one appointment where too much volume was added.

Choose the Right Amount

It is easy to think that you need a lot of filler to make your lips look plump but this is not necessary. Lip filler is done in very small quantities so it is important to not exceed these amounts or there is a risk of the lips looking too big or out of proportion. It is important to tell your practitioner your goals as if you only want a subtle plump, they will know the exact amount to use. Here at Face Hub Facial Aesthetics, we use Juvéderm filler which know for its mailable and smooth texture making it easier to work with to get natural results.

Know Lip Proportions

One of the most important things that [people may not think about is the right lip proportions. The perfect lip proportions are known as the golden ratio. This is when the top lip should be smaller than the bottom lip at the ratio 1:1:6. If the upper and lower lip have the same amount of volume or the ratio of the lips are nothing close to the golden ratio it can make the lips look very artificial leading to the dreaded ‘trout pout’!

Know Lip Filler Placements

It is important to explain your goal results to your practitioner to make sure you are happy with the end results. Depending on the results you want and the technique of the practitioner the placement of the filler injections might be different. Usually injecting filler directly into the lip will be for a fuller plump look whereas injecting filler into the vermillion borders of the lips will create a more defined and contoured shape. When injecting the vermillion borders the sides of the mouth should not be injected as this can cause them to be more plump risking them looking like ‘trout pout’. Once you explain want you want to your practitioner they will know where to inject the filler for your desired look.

Choose Hyaluronic Acid Filler

Most dermal fillers are formulated from hyaluronic acid which is naturally found in the skin. This means that lip filler has little to no risk of side effects or complications. Here at Face Hub Facial Aesthetics, we use Juvéderm filler which is the top filler on the market and is formulated with high levels of hyaluronic acid compared to other fillers which are formulated with animal-based hyaluronic acid. The best thing about hyaluronic acid is that it can be dissolved with hyaluronidase. So, if a patient is unhappy with their results there is no problem having them removed. This is reassuring for patients who are afraid of having their lips look overdone.
